Why do Velvet Nails look like velvet?

The velvet look is not created by an actual velvety or matte surface. Rather, the special feature is the arrangement of the magnetic pigments in the uncured gel. When positioned accordingly, they reflect light from different directions.

As a result, the shimmer appears to move across the nail as you move your hand. The optical depth makes the surface look soft and almost textile-like – similar to velvet, whose fibers appear lighter or darker depending on the incidence of light.

This also means: Velvet Cat Eye Nails can be sealed with a high-gloss top coat and still look velvety.

Velvet Cat Eye vs. classic Cat Eye Nails

The most important difference lies in the light reflection.

Classic Cat Eye:
A concentrated, clearly recognizable line of light creates the typical cat eye effect.

Velvet Cat Eye:

DIY Velvet Cat Eye Nails – Step-by-Step

Step 1: Prepare natural nails

Gently push back the cuticles and remove invisible cuticle from the nail plate. Prepare the natural nail according to the chosen modelage and thoroughly remove filing dust.

Step 2: Base and modelage

Next, work the desired gel modelage. Short almond, almond, oval, and square shapes are particularly suitable for velvet nails. After building the shape, file it into the desired form if necessary and thoroughly dust the nail.

Step 3: Apply base color

Depending on the desired velvet look, a matching color gel can be applied first. A dark background intensifies many Cat Eye effects.

Step 4: Apply Cat Eye Gel

Now apply an even layer of Cat Eye or Tiger Eye Gel.

Important: Do not cure yet.

The magnetic pigments must remain mobile so they can subsequently be aligned with the magnet.

Step 5: Create the velvet effect

This is where it differs from the classic Cat Eye. Guide the magnet to different sides of the nail in turn and observe how the reflection changes. The goal is no single sharply defined line, but a soft, flat light concentration.

Hold the magnet as close as possible to the uncured gel without touching the surface. Different magnet positions can be used to create different reflections.

Step 6: Check the effect

Move your hand slightly and view the nail from different angles. If the reflection is too concentrated into a single line, the gel can be reworked with the magnet before curing. Only cure once the desired velvety light effect is achieved.

Step 7: Curing

Cure the Cat Eye Gel according to the respective product instructions. For Tiger Eye Gel 14 F322 – SKU 98817, for example, cure for 60 seconds in UV/LED or 120 seconds in UV.

Step 8: Sealing

Finally, finish the design with a suitable sealing gel and cure according to product instructions. A high-gloss finish enhances the light reflection and brings out the magnetic depth particularly well.

What magnet do you need for Velvet Cat Eye Nails?

It is less about a specific "velvet tool" and more about how the magnetic field is used.

Why isn't my Velvet Cat Eye effect working?

It is often due to the timing of magnetization. The Cat Eye Gel must not be cured before using the magnet. The magnetic particles can only be rearranged as long as they are mobile.

The position of the magnet is also crucial. If it is only applied from one side, a concentrated Cat Eye line is more likely to form. For the velvet look, however, the reflection should be distributed more broadly and softly over the nail.

Another tip: Design each nail individually and then cure immediately. This keeps the desired effect exactly where you placed it.
