Gel Nails Glossary – All Terms Explained Simply

Do you wonder what terms like Builder Gel, Rubber Base, or Primer mean? In our gel nails glossary, we explain the most important technical terms related to gel modeling, UV gel, and nail design simply and clearly.

Whether you're a beginner or a professional – here you'll quickly find the right explanations and know exactly which product or technique is suitable for you.

Natural nail reinforcement is a stable protective layer applied to your own nails – without a classic extension. A gel, BIAB, or a flexible builder product is applied to strengthen the natural nail, smooth out minor imperfections, and protect the nail from tearing. This technique is particularly suitable for anyone who wants to grow out their own nails but needs more stability in everyday life.

Builder gel is a building gel used to stabilize and shape nail enhancements. It provides strength, evens out irregularities, and helps correctly sculpt the so-called apex – the structural build-up of the nail. Builder gel is often used for natural nail overlays, refill services, and enhancements requiring more stability.

Rubber Base Gel is a particularly flexible base with a slightly self-leveling effect. It adheres very well to soft, thin, or flexible natural nails and can visually smooth out small ridges. Compared to very rigid gels, Rubber Base adapts more to the natural movement of the nail and is therefore particularly popular for sensitive or flexible nails.

Primer is an adhesion promoter applied to the prepared natural nail before gel, acrylic, or other sculpting products. It improves the bond between the natural nail and the material and can help reduce lifting. Depending on the product, there are acid-based and acid-free primers. Which variant makes sense depends on the nail type and the system used.

A buffer is a fine polishing or matting file that gently roughens or smooths the nail surface. It is used to prepare the natural nail for modeling or to soften transitions after filing. A buffer works much more gently than a classic nail file and should always be used carefully so that the natural nail is not unnecessarily thinned.

Fiberglass gel is a builder gel with finely incorporated fiberglass particles or a correspondingly reinforced structure. It is designed for particularly strong nail enhancements and is often suitable for stressed nails or for repairs. Many people use fiberglass gel when a gel needs to offer more stability than very flexible systems.

Cleaner is a cleaning liquid used in nail design, among other things, to remove the inhibition layer, to clean surfaces, or to clean certain tools. It is important to note: Cleaner is not a remover. So it does not automatically remove gel or UV polish, but primarily serves to clean during or after modeling.

Base gel is the primer layer in a gel or UV polish system. It is applied as the first layer of material to the prepared natural nail and creates the basis for good adhesion. Depending on the system, base gel remains rather thin or already has slightly leveling properties.

UV gel is a light-curing material that hardens under UV or LED light and is used for gel modeling, natural nail overlays, or nail extensions. It remains pliable before curing, allowing for precise work. Depending on the product, UV gels are available as base gel, builder gel, top coat gel, or 1-phase gel.

1-phase gel is a gel that combines several working steps in one product. Depending on the formulation, it can be used for adhesion, building, and finishing, thus simplifying the modeling process. 1-phase gel is particularly popular for beginners or for a quick workflow because fewer product changes are necessary.

Remover is a solution used to remove nail polish, UV polish, or special modeling products, depending on the product type. It is usually used for the gentle removal of soak-off systems. Which remover is suitable always depends on the material. Not every gel can be soaked off and removed – many modeling gels have to be filed off.

A Zellette is a lint-free cellulose wipe used in nail design for cleaners, removers or other liquids. It is particularly practical because, unlike cotton pads, it leaves hardly any lint on the nail surface. Zellettes are often used to clean the inhibition layer, degrease or prepare the nails.

The apex is the highest point of the nail enhancement and plays a crucial role in the stability of the nail. It is located in the back third of the nail and ensures that pressure is distributed evenly. Without a correctly built apex, the nail can break or lift more easily. Especially with longer nails, the correct structure is important to ensure durability and a natural appearance.

Nail modeling refers to the building up or strengthening of natural nails with materials such as gel, acrylic, or polygel. The nail can either be extended or just stabilized. The aim is to visually enhance the nails, strengthen them, and give them a uniform shape. Nail modeling is particularly popular for brittle or thin nails.

With tip extensions, an artificial plastic nail is glued onto the natural nail to lengthen it. The tip is then adjusted, filed, and coated with gel. This method is particularly suitable for beginners as it is easier to implement than extension with a stencil.

Nail tips are pre-made plastic nails used to extend the natural nail. They are attached with special glue and then filed into shape. This is followed by modeling with gel or acrylic. Tips are available in various sizes and shapes and enable quick results.

With sculpted nail extensions, the nail is extended directly with gel on a special form. This technique does not require artificial tips and allows for a very natural nail shape. It requires a bit more practice but offers more flexibility in design.

Sealing gel is the final layer of a nail modeling and provides shine, protection, and durability. It protects the underlying layers from scratches, discoloration, and external influences. Depending on the product, it can be high-gloss or matte.

A top coat is a final layer that seals and protects the nail. It is often used with UV polishes or traditional nail enhancements and provides a well-groomed finish. Additionally, it extends the durability of the color.

A Matte Top Coat provides a velvety, matte finish on the nails. Instead of shine, it creates a modern, elegant look. It is applied like a regular top coat but specifically alters the final result.

Color gel is a gel with color pigments that is used to design nails. It is applied after the builder gel and cured under UV or LED light. Color gels are available in many colors and effects.

Glitter Gel contains small glitter particles and creates sparkling effects on the nails. It can be applied over the entire nail or used for designs, giving your nail modeling a special look.

Cat Eye Gel contains magnetic pigments that can be moved with a magnet. This creates special light reflections and patterns reminiscent of a cat's eye.

Chrome Powder is a fine effect powder that is applied to the nail to create a reflective, metallic look. It is usually rubbed onto a special topcoat.

Stamping is a technique where patterns are transferred onto the nail using a stamper. This allows for quick creation of precise designs.

Nail stickers are self-adhesive designs that are applied to the nail. They are easy to use and are particularly suitable for quick designs.

Rhinestones are small decorative elements that are glued onto the nail. They add glamorous accents and are often used for special designs.

Nail Art encompasses all creative designs and embellishments on nails. This includes patterns, colors, effects, and decorative elements.

Bits are different attachments for the nail drill. Depending on their shape and material, they are suitable for different tasks.

A nail drill is an electrical device used for nail care. It is used for removing gel, shaping, and detailed work.

A ceramic bit is a router bit made of ceramic, which is particularly gentle and durable. It generates less heat.

A diamond bit is frequently used for precise work, for example on the cuticles or in delicate areas.
