Medium viscosity, thick viscosity or self-levelling – which builder gel is right for me?

The viscosity describes how fluid a gel is. It therefore significantly influences the application.

Medium-viscosity gels are relatively easy to spread and can support an even build-up. Self-levelling and thick-viscosity builder gels stay more firmly where they are placed. This offers more control and can be helpful, for example, with longer overlays or when modelling several nails.

Clear, milky or opaque builder gel

In addition to consistency, the appearance also plays an important role. A clear builder gel is versatile and can be used, for example, as a base for colour gel or nail art.

Milky, rosé and lightly tinted builder gels, on the other hand, can create a natural look right from the build-up. Opaque cover variants conceal the natural nail bed more effectively and are suitable, for example, for nude, French or baby boomer overlays.

Builder gel for strengthening the natural nail and nail extensions

Builder gel is not only suitable for classic gel nails. With a suitable product, the natural nail can be strengthened without unnecessarily changing its appearance.

For a nail extension, the builder gel can, for example, be combined with tips or modelling templates. Especially with longer nails, the gel used should offer enough stability for the planned shape and length.

Applying builder gel correctly

Before the build-up, the natural nail is carefully prepared. In the classic 3-phase system, a suitable primer or adhesion gel follows.

The builder gel is then modelled and cured under a suitable UV/LED lamp according to the respective product specifications. Afterwards, the nail can be filed into shape if necessary and the design can be enhanced with colour gel, French gel or nail art. A suitable top coat completes the process.

Which builder gel is right for my modelling?

Not every builder gel is equally suitable for every technique. When choosing, you should pay particular attention to the following properties:

Viscosity → Self-levelling → Opacity → Desired application → Gel system

Someone who wants to work quickly and with self-levelling products needs different product properties than a nail designer who wants to model a highly controlled and self-levelling build-up.
